All about 'Nana'


NANA (ナナ) is a shōjo manga by mangaka Ai Yazawa, serialised in Cookie published by Shueisha, which tends to print more mature shōjo titles. The first twelve volumes of the series have cumulatively sold over 22 million copies.[1] The manga derives its title from the name of the two main characters, both of whom are called Nana. What sets them apart, however, is the stark difference between their personalities. One Nana has a childlike innocence and tends to lose touch with reality, while the other is a strong, self-confident singer in a punk band.

NANA is presently being released in North America by Viz Media in Shojo Beat magazine. The manga has also been adapted into a highly successful live-action movie with a sequel released on December 9, 2006, and an anime adaptation that premiered on April 5, 2006.

Plot synopsis

Nana Osaki is a punk singer who wants to debut as soon as possible to leave her ex-boyfriend, Ren Honjo, behind. Nana and Ren were members of the same group, and lived together as lovers in an apartment. When Ren was offered a chance to debut in Tokyo as a replacement member of the popular band TRAPNEST (TRANES for short), Nana had to choose between either going with Ren and being his stay-at-home girlfriend, or remaining with her own band. Realizing that following Ren would mean giving up her own dream to be a singer, she chooses to cultivate her own band, BLACK STONES (BLAST for short).

Nana Komatsu, the other Nana, is called Hachi by everyone in the manga after she met Nana Osaki (as explained in the manga, to avoid confusion of their names). Nana described Hachi as a little puppy, very loyal to other people but demanding much of their attention. ("Hachikō" is the name of a famous dog in Japan, while, appropriately, "hachi" is the word for "eight" in Japanese, while "nana" is the word for "seven".) She grew up in a sheltered suburban lifestyle in which she was treated as a child for much of her life. With a habit of falling in love at first sight, Hachi has always depended on other people to help her, especially her high school friend Junko Saotome. However, Junko eventually had to leave Hachi to attend a selective art design college in Tokyo. Hachi desperately wanted to follow Junko to Tokyo, but had no means in which to support herself there. However, after working hard on her own, she was finally able to move there as well. Nana had a boyfriend at that time, called Shoji Endo.

Nana and Hachi meet in a train by chance, and after a string of coincidences, they come to live together in an apartment numbered 707. Despite having contrasting characters and ideals, the Nanas like and respect each other.

While the BLACK STONES begin to gain popularity at live gigs, other issues need resolving. After discovering the past story of Ren and Nana, Hachi invites Nana to the TRAPNEST concert in the hope that the couple will reunite. Nana accepts the invitation, but she goes with the determination of tying up her feelings for Ren once and for all. However, things go a little differently, and with some help from their mutual friend Yasu, Ren and Nana get back together.

Though Nana's romance with Ren has been rekindled, Hachi's own lovelife is in shambles. She discovers that Shoji has been cheating on her with Sachiko, one of his coworkers. Hachi ends their relationship, saying that she never wants to see Shoji again.

Nana introduces Hachi to Takumi Ichinose, her favorite member of Ren's band, TRAPNEST. The two begin a romantic relationship, though it isn't an ideal romance. Hachi only sees Takumi when he has time off from touring and doing work for Trapnest. It seems to be purely physical, with Hachi aware of the fact that she doesn't really know Takumi as anything other than an iconic guitarist, and that he is notorious as a ladies' man. At the same time, the guitarist of BLACK STONES, Nobuo "Nobu" Terashima, declares his love for her. Hachi is torn between her love for Nobu and her relationship with Takumi. In the end she chooses Nobu, and splits up with Takumi over the phone – although Takumi doesn't realise it.

For a while Hachi and Nobu enjoy a happy, loving relationship – they understand each other and have fun together. Then, Hachi finds out she's pregnant. Unable to bring herself to abort and knowing that it must be Takumi's, she becomes listless and unhappy. Takumi returns, makes the discovery, and challenges Nobu – he'll take care of Hachi and the baby no matter who turns out to be the father. Hachi, thinking of her child's future, knows that while she loves Nobu, he can't support her. When Takumi offers to marry her, she accepts.

Hachi leaves the apartment she shares with Nana and she regrets it, but she can't bring herself to say it directly. Nana is also unable to express her feelings about the separation, though a marriage proposal from Ren offers hope for the future. Though the two friends are far apart, their thoughts remain with each other.

During this time, Blast's popularity continues to rise. However, with this rise, both its members and some of their fans felt that Blast's music have become too commercialized. A tabloid magazine, Search, first zeroes in on Ren's and Nana's relationship. When their photographer managed to obtain photos of Ren and his bandmate Reira (Named after the song Layla) together, the editor sends them over to Nana. To avoid the leak, Takumi decided to reveal his relationship with Hachi and to register their marriage immediately. Meanwhile, both Nobu and Yasu got into relationships with actresses managed by their company.

Still not giving up, Search then decides to focus on Nana's past. They've established that the mother of one of Blast's fans, Misato Uehara, is Nana's mother too. Meanwhile, they've dug up that the surname of her birth father may be Tsuzuki, and Mai Tsuzuki (the "fake" Misato Uehara) apparently has something to hide; she has expressed her wish that Misato and Nana not meet.

Characters

The two main characters are the two Nanas: Nana Osaki, a punk-rock singer with a style to match, and Nana Komatsu, also known as Hachi, a small-town girl who moves to Tokyo to start a new life. They meet on a train, and their destinies are sealed. VIZ Media, the English translator of the manga, often refers to the girls as "Nana O." and "Nana K."

Other important characters include Hachi's friends and ex-boyfriend, the members of Nana's band, and the members of the band TRAPNEST.

Movie

NANA has been made into a movie which was released on September 3rd, 2005. The movie stars Mika Nakashima as the punk star Osaki Nana, and Aoi Miyazaki as Hachi (Komatsu Nana). The DVD edition was released on March 3rd, 2006. The film did quite well at the Japanese box office, staying in the top 10 for several weeks.

Theme Songs

In addition to creating a NANA craze throughout Asia, the movie also helped launch Mika Nakashima to the peak of her career as she released the single "GLAMOROUS SKY" under the name NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA. The single created topicality with its special collaboration between Nakashima, HYDE (who wrote the song), and NANA author Yazawa AiORICON (who wrote the lyrics). The single became Nakashima's first number one single on the Charts.

The movie also helped promote another artist, Yuna Ito, who starred in the movie as TRAPNEST vocal REIRA, released her debut single "ENDLESS STORY," the insert song of the movie, under the name REIRA starring YUNA ITO. The single ranked second on the ORICON charts, next to Nakashima's "GLAMOROUS SKY," and made Yuna Ito one of the most successful debuting artists of 2005.

Movie Sequel

NANA 2, the sequel to the first movie, was announced right after the first debuted. However, on August 4, 2006, Toho stated that shooting will begin mid-September and that the movie is supposed to be released on December 9, 2006. Aoi Miyazaki and Ryuhei Matsuda will not be reprising their respective roles as Nana Komatsu and Ren Honjo; as such, their roles have been assigned to Yui Ichikawa and Nobuo Kyou, respectively [1].

Two new singles will be released under NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA and REIRA starring YUNA ITO. Mika Nakashima is one of the confirmed cast members as well as Yuna Ito, who had recently confirmed that she would reprise her role as Reira in the upcoming movie.

However, the sequel was a let-down for fans and company, it only peaked #4 at the Japanese Movie Rankings, and had much more bad press than any good. Critics have claimed that the exchange of both superstars Aoi Miyasaki and Ryuhei Matsuda were two reasons.[citation needed]

The movie had its international premiere in New York City on December 15, 2006. It opened for a single showing at the IFC in Soho. Both Mika Nakashima and Yui Ichikawa were present.

Theme Songs

NANA 2 once again featured the two artists Mika Nakashima and Yuna Ito, releasing songs under the names NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA and REIRA starring YUNA ITO respectively. NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA's new single, "Hitoiro," which featured TAKURO of GLAY as composer and NANA author Yazawa Ai as the lyricist again, did not do as well as its predecessor "GLAMOROUS SKY," peaking at only #5 on the ORICON charts. Two weeks after the release of the single, however, NANA starring MIKA NAKASHIMA released her first and last album, THE END, which managed to rank at #2 on the ORICON charts.

REIRA starring YUNA ITO's "Truth" had no more luck than Nakashima's new single, ranking in only at the tenth place on the ORICON charts. The music video of the single was filmed in Scotland and used as scenes of the movie. Neither singles were as record-setting as their predecessors.

Anime

NANA has been made into an anime series. The first opening and third ending songs are sung by Anna Tsuchiya for the band BLACK STONES as Nana Osaki, and OLIVIA sings the second opening and first and second endings for the band TRAPNEST as Reira Serizawa. The first DVD release was on 2006-07-07.

CD Releases

As with the movie NANA, the anime helped promote two artists, OLIVIA and Anna Tsuchiya. In addition to their respective singles, there have also been several albums released for the anime. Though unfortunately, these releases did not fare as well as the movie-related releases.

There are currently two soundtracks for the anime series - Nana 707 soundtracks and Nana 7to8 soundtrack. Nana 707 is literally a soundtrack. It consists of 44 tracks, all of which are background music heard in the series with the exception of track 44 which is a song.

Two versions of Nana 707 were released - a limited edition which comes in the form of a hardcover book containing stills from the series plus 7 postcards, and a regular version.

Games

There is a "NANA" game released on the PS2. The PS2 game is produced by Konami and released on 17 March 2005. A PSP game, NANA: Subete wa Daimaou no Omichibiki!? (NANA: すべては大魔王のお導き!?) was released on 6 July 2006.

Seiyuu

Of worthy note is that the seiyuu cast for the PS2 game is entirely different from the anime cast. Also, for the PSP game, the seiyuu cast of the anime is used.

Tribute album

There has also been an album, "LOVE for NANA ~Only 1 Tribute~" with 3 versions(Black Stone limited version, Black Stone standart version and Trapnest standart version) released in tribute of the series, including songs by Tetsu, Do As Infinity, Ai Otsuka, Tommy heavenly6, Skye Sweetnam and Sex Machineguns.

Trivia

  • The surnames of the 2 Nanas may have been chosen to give their "seniority"; the Ō (大) in Ōsaki's surname means "big", while Ko (小) in Komatsu's means "small".
  • The seiyū who voiced Hachi in the PS2 game (Rumi Shishido) also had a cameo role as Hachi's bad tempered superior at the publisher's in the first live-action movie. She also was the seiyū of Gokinjo Monogatari's Kouda Mikako, another Yazawa Ai title.
  • The BLACK STONES name is derived from the Swisher Sweets cigarettes smoked habitually by Yasu and Shin.
  • Happy Berry, the clothing line of Gokinjo Monogatari's protagonist Kouda Mikako, can be seen in various scenes in Nana (as well as sudosaurus for Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai, Paradise Kiss and Gokinjo Monogatari).

Nana..one of the best manga ever!
Awal mulanya dari sekedar hunting film-film lepas Jepang yang sudah pabalatak di gerai dvd bajakan dan setelah menonton film ini (bagus sekali, very touching) mulailah googling sampai ber-wikipedia. Ternyata banyak informasi yang didapat, hah..ternyata film tersebut diadaptasi dari manga karya Ai Yazawa dan bahkan animenya pun sudah pernah dibuat. Then, I 'm so exciting to search the manga and anime.

Setelah mencari mulai dari Kinokuniya dengan manga Nana terbitan US. berharga 135 rb rupiah (so expensive, that so much for manga), sampai bergoogling ria, akhirnya menemukan sebuah e-shop komik, anime, dorama, etc. Demi Nana, rela mencoba berbelanja lewat internet, walaupun sambil takut-takut (gimana kalau tertipu, uang sudah ditransfer, barang tidak dikirim). Ya, pada akhirnya dapat juga manga Nana (walaupun belum tamat), anime, serta manga karya Ai Yazawa lainnya seperti Paradise Kiss, Gokinjo Monogatari, Kagen No Tsuki, dan lain-lain.

Selain manga, anime, dan film, yang cukup menarik dari Nana adalah soundtrack film (baca:live action movie) dan animenya. Sebelumnya tahu apa sih dengan nama Mika Nakashima, Yuna Ito, Anna Tsuchiya, dan Olivia Lufkin? Sama sekali tidak pernah dengar, kecuali mungkin Mika Nakashima, soalnya Aswin punya kaset The Best of Mika. Begitu menonton film Nana, penasaran dengan soundtrack filmnya, berkat jasa total video converter lagu-lagu dalam filmnya bisa di-rip jadi mp3 (that's a magical software!), walaupun kualitas suara tidak begitu bagus.

Yaa..kembali ke googling lagi, sekarang hampir semua lagu soundtracknya sudah dimiliki, dan puas banget haaahh...berkat internet muaaahh
